About twenty minutes later, the limo gently pulls to a stop in front of a large, modern house at the far end of a long private driveway. The house is hidden from the road by a line of trees and has enormous windows on the first and second storeys, windows that offer expansive views of the surrounding landscape.

‘This is your home?’ Kat says, looking over my shoulder at the beautiful building.

‘It is,’ Don says. ‘This is where I hang my hat.’

‘It’s…’ she searches for the right word for a second, ‘gorgeous.’

‘Thank you,’ Don says.

The driver opens Don’s door and he unfolds himself again and stands up in the cool night air. I open my door and hop out. I turn around, hand out, ready to help Kat, but she’s climbed out Don’s side. His large dark hand lifts her small white hand as she climbs out of the car. He smiles at her and holds up a second bottle of that two-hundred-dollar wine.

‘Would the two of you like to come inside and share this with me?’ he says, asking both of us, but only looking at Kat.

‘Yes, please,’ Kat says. ‘I’d love to.’

Don puts his arm around her shoulders, apparently guiding her towards the front entrance. I see his hand touch her shoulder and feel another maddening jolt in my stomach. What the hell is this guy playing at? Surely, he could afford any woman he wants, why does he need to hit on my wife like this?

I take a moment to breathe and calm down. Maybe it’s nothing. Like he said, he isn’t married. Maybe he doesn’t really know how to act around people. Maybe this is completely innocent.

Don glances back at me over his shoulder, a grin on his face.

‘Are you coming, Dick?’ he says.

Maybe it’s not completely innocent.

I follow the large black man and my wife into his home.
